One of South Africa's most successful rugby captains, he led the Springboks in 15 internationals, winning 12 of them.
In 1995 he was manager of the Springbok side that won the Rugby World Cup in Johannesburg.
His achievements include the creation of the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Cape Town.
