Arnold Palmer (1929-2016)

The adoring gallery at St Andrews watches Arnold Palmer playing in the 1960 Open Championship. His flamboyance, his passion and his vision made him admired and loved by golf fans everywhere.

Palmer was one of the true giants of golf who played a key role in the expansion of the sport in the 1960s and the emergence of The Open as one of the great sports events of the world.

He also revered the unique heritage of St Andrews as the Home of Golf and was rewarded in 2010 with an honorary degree from the University of St Andrews for his contribution to golf.

His love affair with the town never wavered and for many years he has been a patron of the Pilgrim Foundation which preserves and restores old buildings in St Andrews.

Arnold said just last year: “St Andrews has special memories for me – it is a wonderful and unique place.”

The world of golf would also agree that Arnold Palmer was a wonderful and unique man.
